International Spanish Academy
Sweet Grass School is the designated south-west Edmonton site for the International Spanish Academy. We currently operate a Kindergarten to Grade 6 program.
The International Spanish Academy (ISA) is a bilingual English and Spanish Program. This program is a partial immersion program, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, where in elementary school 50% of the curriculum is taught in Spanish and 50% in English. The intent of the program is to enable students to achieve enough oral and written competence in both languages to successfully communicate and utilize English and Spanish as languages of learning, and to develop an appreciation of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Students are taught the same curriculum as others in the same grade level.
Students in the program take both English and Spanish Language Arts. Subjects such as Mathematics, Health, Art and Physical Education are also taught in Spanish. Science and Social Studies will continue to be taught in English.
This bilingual program prepares students to pursue post-secondary education in Spanish. Graduates receive internationally recognized diplomas through the Spanish government.
As entrance to the program is designed for Kindergarten and Grade 1, no previous knowledge of the Spanish language is required.
Students may be admitted to the program at later grades depending on their proficiency.
