    Sweet Grass School

Our school logo is the result of input gathered from parents, staff and students regarding what Sweet Grass School symbolizes.

The logo represents the energy and spirit of Sweet Grass School.  The dynamic figures symbolize the collaborative team of students, staff and parents and loosely reference the origins of the school’s name.  A sacred herb, sweet grass is believed to evoke positive energies and was used in Aboriginal ceremonies as part of a cleansing and purification process.  It is also believed that when sweet grass is burned, a sacred place is created for the spirits to listen and provide energies of love.

The logo pays homage to this background.  The beliefs surrounding the sweet grass plant are in alignment with the school vision.

Vision: Sweet Grass Elementary School is an outstanding learning environment where positive energies from students, staff and parents produce a caring, supportive environment where all students can succeed and thrive.

Mission: At Sweet Grass, quality teaching promotes engaged thinkers with an ethical spirit. Students learn to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers and lifelong learners is all aspect of their learning environment. We believe in the spirit and energy of all our students and that their potential to learn comes from a collaborative team approach between school, students and parents.

  • International Spanish Academy

    International Spanish Academy

Sweet Grass School is the designated south-west Edmonton site for the International Spanish Academy.  We currently operate a Kindergarten to Grade 6 program.

The International Spanish Academy (ISA) is a bilingual English and Spanish Program. This program is a partial immersion program, from Kindergarten to Grade 12, where in elementary school 50% of the curriculum is taught in Spanish and 50% in English. The intent of the program is to enable students to achieve enough oral and written competence in both languages to successfully communicate and utilize English and Spanish as languages of learning, and to develop an appreciation of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Students are taught the same curriculum as others in the same grade level.

Students in the program take both English and Spanish Language Arts. Subjects such as Mathematics, Health, Art and Physical Education are also taught in Spanish. Science and Social Studies will continue to be taught in English.

This bilingual program prepares students to pursue post-secondary education in Spanish. Graduates receive internationally recognized diplomas through the Spanish government.

No previous knowledge of the Spanish language is required.

For more information about the program or to register,
please contact the school office at (780) 437-0366.

Convenient bus service is available from areas in south-west Edmonton.

    Clubs & Activities

    Extracurricular Activities

At Sweet Grass School we believe that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. We encourage our students to get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities that promote the development of skills beyond the classroom.

    Choir/Orff/Handbell and Chimes Club

Students in grade 1-6 have the opportunity to join various music clubs throughout the year. These groups have the opportunity to share their passion and talent for music at assemblies, concerts and performances around the district. They meet regularly during lunch and recess breaks.

    Home Reading Program

At Sweet Grass School, we believe strong readers become successful learners. While we focus on reading and reading culture in school, it is important the students continue to read at home as well. To help students develop their reading skills, we operate a home reading program where students are asked to read for a certain amount of time each night depending on their grade level. We recognize the accomplishments of the Home Reading Program at our school assemblies held throughout the year. And most importantly, our students develop a lifelong love of reading.

    Student Leadership

Our AMA Safety Patrol helps to keep children safe outside while crossing the street. Park monitors help to keep students safe on the playground by reminding them of safety rules. Grade six Office Helpers help answer phones in the office during recess and lunch.  Students also take an active role in leading our assemblies.

Field Trips and Visitors to our School

Curriculum enrichment is provided throughout the year in the form of field trips and visitors to our school. Field trips are arranged by individual classroom teachers and are communicated to parents throughout the year. The Parent Council supports these valuable experiences by providing funds to ensure that all students are able to take part in these beneficial learning activities.

    Sweet Grass Citizenship Assemblies

During our monthly assemblies, students work with our staff to lead our Character Education program. Students take part by performing songs or plays and acting as MC's for the assembly. In addition students are recognized for demonstrating good citizenship and meeting their Home Reading goals.

There are also many Theme days held throughout the year that give students the opportunity to have fun in a productive learning environment.
